Local performing arts group Te Reanga Morehu o Rātana have ascended into the top echelon of Te Matatini, the biennial kapa haka competitions dedicated to showcasing the best of the best in Aotearoa & Australia. Te Matatini- Kapa Haka Aotearoa is an innovative, powerful form of creative expression, displaying artistic excellence through performance, visual arts and Te Reo Māori.

Te Reanga Morehu o Rātana were first place Aotea winners in the 2024 regional competition, catapulting them into the finals for 2025 Te Kāhui Maunga competitions alongside another kapa haka group Te Kura Nui o Paerangi. The overall competition was won by Ngāti Whakaue (Te Arawa). Our local teams based in Whanganui keep growing in strength during this exciting, dynamic time for kapa haka.

Te Reanga Morehu o Rātana was established in 1997. Led by Te Taepa Kameta and Te Oranga Tamou, the kapa haka group promotes a kaupapa of peace, ‘te rongopai’, following the teachings of the Rātana faith. There are more than 40 kai-haka (performers) that are dedicated to a stringent practice routine leading up to competition, sacrificing much of their time and needing vital support from their wider communities to execute to the level of excellence required to be at their best onstage. The group is based at Rātana Pā, 20 mins south of Whanganui.
