Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery announces the 35th Whanganui Arts Review. Back after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, in 2025 we partner with Pattillo. As principal sponsor, Pattillo make possible the Open Award which is a generous $7000 prize for the winning artist and the opportunity to be the recipient of the Pattillo Project, a solo artist showcase exhibition at Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery in 2026. Pattillo have contributed markedly to the Whanganui Arts Review since 2019 allowing the gallery to upscale the exhibition, the opening, the awards, and generally increase the value of the Review to artists.

Abby Cunnane is a curator and writer with a background in art history. Prior to joining Te Pātaka Toi Adam Art Gallery in early 2025 as Manutaki Director, she was director at The Physics Room in Ōtautahi Christchurch, and worked as a curator at St Paul St Gallery (now Te Wai Ngutu Kākā Gallery) in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and at City Gallery Wellington in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. She is the co-editor of arts and climate change journal The Distance Plan (with artist Amy Howden-Chapman), and holds a master’s degree in curatorial writing through Te Wānanga Aronui o Tāmaki Makaurau—Auckland University of Technology, a bachelor’s degree in art history and english literature from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, and Te Pīnakitanga ki te Reo Kairangi through Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.

Any original artwork in any medium, completed in the last twelve months by any artist living or working in the Whanganui region or an area that links to the Whanganui River including Whanganui, Ruapehu, Rangitikei and South Taranaki.
Q: Can I have some feedback about my work?
A: The judge may make comments about the award-winning pieces at the opening event and awards ceremony at Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery on Saturday 31 May, 6–8pm. Otherwise feedback will not be available.
Q: My work won’t be ready on submission day.
A: Unfortunately, no works can be accepted after submission day.
Q: I haven’t heard if I have been accepted or not, what shall I do?
A: Emails will be sent out on Monday 26 May. If an email address is not provided or is illegible, letters will be sent via the postal addresses supplied on the submission form.
Q: My work was not accepted into the Arts Review exhibition, but I cannot collect it on Thursday 7 March between 10am – 4pm – what can I do?
A: A nominated person may collect your work for you with your written consent. Either email the gallery on info@sarjeant.org.nz to notify or send your friend along with a note signed by you.
Q: My work was not accepted into the Arts Review exhibition; can I get a refund of my entry fee?
A: No. As stated on the entry form, we are not able to refund entry fees due to the staging costs involved in the Arts Review.
Q: Can I donate my work to the Sarjeant Gallery collection?
A: No. But thank you.
Q: What is the criteria for selection into the Arts Review exhibition?
A: The selection panel are art professionals and consider all aspects of the works, including idea, originality, skill, composition, technique and other aspects. Please also note that the popularity of this event means spatial constraints may also play a part.
Q: What are the criteria for judging the awards?
A: Each year a different judge takes on this honour and each individual will have a differing set of criteria. All invited judges are respected gallery professionals and experienced in viewing and selecting works for exhibition.
