The Pattillo Whanganui Arts Review is New Zealand’s longest running, open call, community art exhibition.

The 2022 Pattillo Whanganui Arts Review award winners were announced at a ceremony attended by over 300 people in Whanganui on Friday 11 November. The Open Award was taken home by Chris Connolly.

The Open Award comprises a $7000 cash prize, the Pattillo Project – which is a solo artist showcase exhibition at the Sarjeant Gallery, the Making It: Capability Building for Creatives sessions courtesy of Whanganui & Partners plus an artist website designed and built by Two Monkeys.

Two Excellence Award winners also received the Making It sessions and $1000 each, from sponsors Dalgleish Architects and Article & Money Poppins.

The judge this year was Dr Chelsea Nichols, Senior Curator at the Dowse Art Museum. On judging the 2022 Whanganui Arts Review she says, “I tried to come into this process with as open a mind as possible but deep down what I really hoped to found was an artist whose work i wasn’t familiar with at all, and something that totally surprised delighted and baffled me in equal measure and Chris Connolly’s work truly delivered on that”

The Sarjeant Galleys Curator and Public Programmes Manager Greg Donson says: “The Arts Review is always a highlight of the Gallery’s exhibition programme and this year we had an incredible 212 entries. Of those 133 works are included in the exhibition. There’s a lot to see and the standard of entries was very high. It takes great courage to enter a show like this so we’d like to thank all the artists for entering”

The exhibition is known as a ‘snapshot of the region’s creative output now’ and works are accepted in any medium, as long as they are completed in the last twelve months by artists living in the Whanganui region or an area that links to the Whanganui River including Whanganui, Ruapehu, Rangitikei and South Taranaki. In addition, this year for the first time, any student enrolled at Whanganui UCOL studying towards a degree, diploma or certificate in Creative Industries was eligible to enter regardless of where they might live.

The exhibition opened on Saturday 12 November and is on show until Sunday 26 February 2023
