Kite making

Kite Making – Nau mai, haere mai – come and spend time in the exhibition, Āta Whakarongo, and transfer your inspirations, hopes and dreams into a kite to celebrate Puanga and welcome in the new year.

When: Monday 8 July, starts 11am – 1pm
Hosts: Te Maari & Sietske
For children between 5 – 12 years old, please be accompanied by an adult to assist.

Kaputī Studio’s Half Day Writing Retreat

Come and enjoy a half-day of devoted writing time alongside Te Awa Tūpua. If you are a writer working mostly from home and/or have a project you’ve been wanting to set some time aside for – this will be a lovely way to whakawhanaungatanga and network with other local writers while enjoying a cosy and creative atmosphere. There will also be an opportunity to share your work and ask for feedback if you would like.

When: Wednesday 10 July, 12 – 4pm

Mature audience. Endless pots of Kaputī provided and some light refreshments.

Kaputī Studio’s Reading Club

It’s reading season and what’s more romantic and lovely than joining your fellow local bookworms in a nice big reading session together. Come along to the Community Arts Centre, bring your book, get cosy and expand your mind. Endless cups of tea provided by Kaputī Studio. Stay for a drink and a kōrero after and share what you’ve been reading about or exchange book recommendations.

Talk: Āta Whakarongo

Āta Whakarongo is discussed by Vanessa Edwards-Buerger and Greg Donson with accompanying artists. Vanessa and Greg will look into the concept of listening carefully and the function and role of the artist’s voice in the current climate.

Artist talk with Gabrielle Belz

Gabrielle Belz speaks to the photographic exhibition showcasing works by Gil Hanly and John Miller.  These images evoke memories of the days of Nga Puna Waihanga and its connections to Whanganui. Belz was an active member of Nga Puna Waihanga from the 1980’s and reflects on the collective power of those involved and the legacy continued today.

When: Saturday 13 July, starts at 1 – 2pm

Wā Kemu – Game time

Nau mai, haere mai – with Puanga in our morning skies the weather is getting makariri! The perfect time to gather your friends and whānau and bring them in for a game of Pakiaka, Kaupapa or good old fashioned Hī Ika! We have a range of kaupapa Māori games and puzzles available for you to try all kindly supplied by the Whanganui Toy Library.

When: Monday 15 July, 12 – 4pm
Host: Te Maari
Targeted towards kids and youth for holiday activity. However younger ones should be assisted by an adult please.

Kaputī & Kōrero Māori

Join us for a kaputī, light kai and a kōrero Māori! Come along and be immersed in our beautiful reo rangatira!

When: Wednesday 17 July, between 10.30am and 12pm

Rāranga Whetū – Weaving Stars

This is a hands-on wānanga, utilising customary rāranga practices to create star formations. We will discuss aspects of Puanga as a time of reflection, acknowledgement, and planning whilst keeping our hands busy and minds sharp. Nau mai, hoki mai.

When: Wednesday 17 July, between 12.30 and 3.30pm
