A Bus Trip to the Wairarapa: A Day of Art, Ideas and Beautiful Places

Date: Friday 25 September 2026
Cost: $115 or $95 for Friends of the Sarjeant Gallery, includes return transport, tours, entry costs and visit arrangements. Lunch is self-funded.
We will depart Whanganui War Memorial Centre at 8.15am, returning approximately 6pm. Numbers are limited.
Note: Parking will not be available at the Memorial Centre on this occasion.

Join the Friends of the Sarjeant Gallery for a specially arranged art excursion to the Wairarapa, discovering four exhibitions at Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, followed by an exclusive visit to the magnificent Rototāwai Gallery, Homestead and Gardens.

Aratoi. Four exhibitions.

Simon Ray: A Constant Flow of Light
What does a landscape look like when you are moving through it at speed? Landscapes blur, merge and become almost abstract, while the quiet rituals of commuting unfold alongside them.

Hannah Bremner: The Imaginary Archives
Expect the familiar to become strange. Everyday objects are transformed into replicas, fragments and imagined artefacts. Taonga tuku iho (treasured things) from Aratoi’s collection — glowing rocks, velvet bones and hybrid objects — converse with Bremner’s artworks.

Angela Singer: Overmorrow
An intriguing and provocative encounter with nature, museums and the stories we tell about animals. Singer’s sculpture and installations ask us to reconsider our relationship with the natural world.

Patented – Inventions That Changed the World
From sugar and the history of the slave trade to the bicycle and the Walkman, explore inventions that have profoundly altered how we live.

Then… to Rototāwai.
From the galleries of Aratoi, we travel into the countryside to discover something altogether different.

Rototāwai is a remarkable collection of New Zealand contemporary art, a beautifully restored historic homestead and eight hectares of gardens, mature trees and lake frontage. We will explore it all with renowned landscape designer Ross Palmer as our tour guide.

There is something wonderfully rare about Rototāwai: art is encountered in a magnificent historic home, a living landscape and a place shaped by generations of family history.
