Under the Sun
Tales of the Unexpected

16 February – 12 May 2019

What happens when you bring together 40 artists working in the medium of glass to make a collaborative work? The wondrous creation you see before you is what happens. This chandelier was produced to celebrate the first joint conference of the New Zealand Society of Artists in Glass (NZSAG) with Ausglass (the Australian counterpart) held in Whanganui from 15-17 February 2019. Collaboration, the theme of the conference, is explored in this work and in the conference’s dynamic programme of speakers comprised of artists working in glass from around the world.

The initial idea for this work was mooted by Jim Dennison and Leanne Williams of the Crystal Chain Gang, for whom collaboration is an integral part of their practice. For this project they invited members of both societies to contribute a component that would respond to the language of chandelier making through the many different approaches to glass making. The resulting work combines blown, cast, flat, fused and flame worked glass.

As its title suggests, the chandelier is a cacophony of different stories, with all of the components singing together. The work wouldn’t have been possible without the collective efforts of those involved and is a true testament to the theme of the conference.
