Bonus Episode – Reopening
In this bonus episode of the podcast hear Sarjeant Gallery staff talk about the reopening of Sarjeant on the Quay.
On the 20th of June 2015 a record flood hit Whanganui. The flood waters breached the front door of Sarjeant on the Quay and submerged the gallery floors. Fortunately we had enough notice to remove all of the artworks from exhibition before the water broke the river banks and the collection was safely housed on the second floor. Sadly the floors and walls couldn’t be saved and for three months contractors tirelessly worked to reline the walls and put down new matai flooring.
The hard work of these contractors and the Sarjeant Gallery staff culminated with the grand reopening on the 26 September. Sarjeant on the Quay opened with six beautiful new exhibitions, including Cat Auburn’s The Horses Stayed Behind, Alexis Neal’s Pura Te Manihera McGregor Whenua Ki Te Whenua, a ceramics show entitled Heads and Tales and three exhibitions highlighting our permanent collection. We also celebrated with a full day of children’s activities, musical performances, exhibition tours and an afternoon tea.
